Prepare for Small Business Saturday on December 5th

small_business_saturday_2015

We are now coming up on the most important time in the year for businesses, and one day stands out: Saturday 5th December. Reputedly this is the busiest shopping day of the year, it is officially known as Small Business Saturday.

Many businesses use this date to attract new customers with special offers or discounts, and some have mulled wine and mince pies as well.

To kick start the event, the Small Business Saturday tour bus comes to Balham, on Friday 20 November, 1.30pm to 3.30pm as part of a nationwide tour from John O’Groats to Lands End. Wandsworth is one of just two London boroughs selected to host the bus this year.

Tom Flynn, from the Small Business Saturday UK, said: “The Small Business Saturday bus is so excited to come to Wandsworth, as the day has had such great support from the borough for the last two years. Wandsworth is home to a huge number of fantastic small businesses who should come down to the bus to find out more about the campaign as well as meet other small businesses”.

The Small Business Saturday Team will be on hand to give out marketing packs and advice on how businesses can make the most of the big day, and My Incubator Ventures will be coming along to offer free small business/start-up support.

Steve Pinto, CEO of Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce says, “Small Business Saturday is a wonderful nationwide initiative giving businesses added opportunities to engage with local shoppers on one of the busiest retail shopping days of the year. Wandsworth Chamber is proud to support Small Business Saturday alongside our long standing campaigns to ‘Buy Local,’ ‘Shop Local’ and ‘Live Local’ all year round.”

Local Author Launches Humorous Short Stories Paperback

Julian Jackson, a journalist based in South London, has just launched a paperback called “The Thatcher Years Reenactment Society and Other Fictions”, consisting of 12 darkly humorous stories about strange characters like part-time Viking Asgrim, or April, an impoverished actress forced to do promotions in a clown suit when she prefers Shakespeare. Many of the stories are set in South London and feature landmarks like Brixton Town Hall.

Julian says, “I wrote these stories over a period of years, just really when something came to me, like Lost Voice, where a male model falls in love with tragic singer Echo. They are about oddballs, and people on the fringes of society, but I didn’t make all of it up. Some of these things happened to me or people I knew over the years, of course I have fictionalised the events, but they have an element of truth.”

Many unusual but vivid characters populate the stories: fat Arnold, who enters an eating contest, but finds his main rival is a diminutive student Krysia – nicknamed Jaws – who needs the money – will romance bloom in these unlikely circumstances? How will callous Professor Augustine Mach justify psychopathy? Will gorgeous but vulnerable pop star Echo fall for a vain male model and what will happen if he rejects her?

Who are the Thatcher Years Reenactment Society?

Julian says, “My regular journalism is about the environment, business and technology, subjects which don’t lend themselves to many laughs, so these stories are an outlet for my black humour and strange flights of imagination. I have nearly finished a novel which is in the same comic space and I hope to release it next year.”

The book is self-published. “I decided to self-publish because collections of short stories are very hard to place with conventional publishers. It was just easier, although I had to put a lot of work into proofreading and design. The cover is from a brilliant artist called Joseph Goode, who really captured the essence of the stories,” Julian adds.

The Thatcher Years Reenactment Society and Other Fictions is available for £5.00 + £1.20 P & P from www.julianjackson.net, and the Kindle edition is available for £1.99 from www.amazon.co.uk

Air Quality – The Invisible Killer – Let’s Make It Better Together

Air Quality Graphic

Air Quality Graphic

Shockingly, air quality in some parts of Wandsworth is quite poor, even compared with other areas of London, which has generally bad air quality by the standards of the rest of the UK. Air pollution has been called the “Invisible Killer”. It has been estimated that air pollution causes thirteen times as many deaths as road accidents. It is only in the past few years that the full scope of this problem has become apparent. Around 10,000 Londoners die prematurely every year as a result of poor air quality. Wandsworth Borough has been made an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) because it exceeded the permissible amount of air quality for Nitrogen Dioxide and tiny chunks of pollution known as ‘particulates’. Although the council are attempting to improve air quality, by actively reducing emissions from their own buildings, vehicle fleet and deliveries as well as supporting walking, cycling and an overall reduction in vehicle usage, we all have a responsibility to take steps to reduce pollution, from our vehicles and equipment.

Today, Tuesday 20th October Wandsworth Radio (http://www.wandsworthradio.com) are hosting a programme at 6.30 pm to discuss this serious problem which potentially affects all of us, although vulnerable people, like children, the elderly, and those suffering from health conditions like asthma are at greatest risk. Wandsworth Chamber of Commerce’s CEO, Steve Pinto will be on the programme. He says, “Air pollution is the biggest killer next to smoking. It is important to raise this issue, and increase awareness of it, so that people can take action. We all use vehicles, fuel in boilers, businesses have a supply chain, so it is important to examine how to reduce the pollutants. At Wandsworth Chamber we are setting an example by using an electric car – which we have christened “Evy” – instead of a petrol or diesel-powered vehicle.”

One free option for mini-cab drivers, which Wandsworth Council has available, is ‘Drive Style’ training which takes one hour and will give expected savings of around £60 per month for every driver. See www.wandsworth.gov.uk for details or contact upatrick@lambeth.gov.uk.

Steve Pinto says, “Be aware of the seriousness of poor air quality, increase your knowledge of the impacts and solutions and take action.” Listen to him on www.wandsworthradio.com on Tuesday 20th October at 6.30 pm.

The WAND Card – A Way For Businesses Bring Some Helpful Magic into Young Lives

Mayor with Wand Card users

The WAND card, for children and young people with a special need or disability, is an innovation from Wandsworth Council. Youngsters experience all sorts of below-the-radar discrimination, such as having to listen to a parent explain why their child needs special attention, or why they should go to the head of a queue, as their child has ADHD. At the very least this is an unnecessary humiliation for the child.

The WAND card aims to provide a child or young person up to nineteen years old with both a method to quickly help them, and a way to access discounts and concessions from shops and services cordially. Lucia Daniels, Disability Information Manager at the council says, “It is a very helpful form of ID which saves a parent or carer having to explain about a disability, and informs staff that the holder of the card may need extra help. For example, opening a shop early so they can make a purchase if the child gets distressed by bright lights and noise at busy times.”

It was launched 3 years ago, in September 2012. Nearly 900 cards have been issued and they are recognised at over 50 establishments within the borough, such as leisure centres, Battersea Park Zoo, libraries, restaurants, barbers, shoe shops, pharmacies and many other outlets. Southside Shopping Centre recognises the card and Neil Churchill, its Manager, says, “We wanted to get involved because we saw it as an opportunity to help our community. It has an amazing impact on those who need our support, those people that we can help. Ultimately if they are using us and we are recognised as disabled-friendly and aware, then its obviously a bonus for our business and they are more likely to visit us again.” Although created specifically for the borough, the card has also been used in other parts of London and the UK, and even got one user a discount in France.

Lucia Daniels emphasises the positive profile of the card, “We want our users to see it as a passport to activities. So youngsters who have it feel they are part of a special club.” There are various criteria for getting a card but the main one is that the child or young person aged up to nineteen has a complex disability or communication disorder that might otherwise stop them getting out and about.

Wandsworth Council are aiming for 1000 users by the end of the year. The plan is to get businesses in all the five main shopping hubs to recognise the card. The council also wants to have businesses support the card in an active way, and they are looking at ways of engaging sponsors.
