Discover the Joy of Dance at Rambert

This January, as the new year beckons us to try something fresh, why not give dance a try? At Rambert, we believe that to give brilliant and daring people the chance to inspire others is to give them the power to change the world for the better. As one of the world’s most diverse dance companies, we’re on a mission to take aweinspiring and adventurous dance out of traditional theatre’s and into everyday spaces. This Spring, our class programme is back, offering something for everyone—whether you’re a complete beginner, a seasoned dancer looking to refine your skills, or simply curious to try something new. From perfecting your ballet technique to exploring contemporary dance, or even finding your flow in a Pilates or yoga class, our expert faculty provide a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment to learn, move, and grow. Emma has been going to ballet classes at Rambert for 2 years. ‘I’ve made new friends and we have a lot of fun—it’s a wholly safe space to try things and make mistakes,’ she says. ‘It’s such a thrill when classmates and the teachers acknowledge even the smallest improvements—it feels like a huge victory. I’ll never be a good dancer, but going to ballet is a highlight of my week’. It’s not just about dance either- Rambert offer movement classes like Pilates and yoga which can help with injury recovery and prevention. ‘As a beginner with back pain, I was nervous to start Pilates’ Catherine told us, who goes to Rambert’s Tuesday Pilates class. ‘But the teacher’s professionalism, gentle touch, and elegant teaching style have helped me gradually gain confidence.’ On Saturday’s, they also offer a contemporary class for people with sight loss and visual impairments. Long time participant, Max, says without the class, many of the attendees would probably never get a chance to try dance: "I appreciate the opportunity given to visually impaired people,’ he says. ‘The teacher Hanna’s teaching is brilliant—she uses words like ‘window wash’ and ‘beach ball’ to describe movements. If words aren’t enough, she corrects our movements with gentle touches. The supporting staff are always encouraging, no matter how many mistakes we make." Discovering the classes at Rambert has been one of the highlights of the year for Kat, who joined the Absolute Beginners Contemporary class. ‘I love dancing, but I find remembering the steps quickly really challenging, and dance classes I’d attended before felt stressful,’ she says. ‘When I went along for the first time, I thought I’d try one class, hide at the back, and run away once I’d reminded myself why I don’t go to dance classes! But Jonathan’s class is really special. It felt accessible, supportive, and loads of fun.’ Kat explains how the class starts with a warm-up and simple cues that change each week, allowing participants to move their bodies and explore. ‘When that connection to your own movement patterns, instincts, and the space around you has been made, the steps come in. Jonathan is funny, serene, kind, and so helpful.’ Encouraged by her experience, Kat also joined Izzi’s Monday night Ballroom Beginners class. ‘You couldn’t get a lovelier teacher to guide you than Izzi,’ she says. ‘With joyful positivity, we learned some partner work and a little routine combining Cha Cha and Tango. It was a pleasure getting to know the other participants, and we developed a lovely camaraderie. Walking out of class onto Southbank with all those endorphins flowing was amazing.’ Kat is grateful to the team at Rambert for creating such a welcoming, inclusive, and joyful space. ‘It’s wonderful to engage with dance just for the pleasure of feeling more connected and alive,’ she says. Our classes are designed to ensure everyone feels included and empowered, no matter their experience or ability. Ready to give it a go?
